Scott A. McGregor

Class of 1974

Technology-Investor-Philanthropist

[SNAPSHOT TBD]

Scott A. McGregor (Class of 1974) is a technology executive, investor, and philanthropist. While at Concord High School, he focused on academics, joined the chess team, and received honors in the 1974 Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He organized a debate league across Delaware’s high schools and led Concord’s own debate club.

From Concord, Scott went on to attend Stanford University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s in computer science and computer engineering, both in 1978. His early work placed him at the heart of computing innovation-- at Xerox PARC he contributed to the window-system architecture for the Xerox Star, a key precursor to personal computers with a graphical user interface.

In 1983 Scott was recruited by Bill Gates at Microsoft to lead the Interactive Systems group that developed Windows 1.0 — a landmark in personal-computer history. He later moved into leadership roles in the semiconductor industry, serving as President & CEO of Philips Semiconductors (now called NXP) in the Netherlands from 2001 to 2004. In 2005, Scott became CEO of Broadcom Corporation, a Fortune-500 U.S. semiconductor company, until the company’s acquisition in 2016. Broadcom’s chips are in almost every cell phone, WiFi network, and AI data center.

Beyond his business accomplishments, Scott is deeply committed to giving back, particularly in the realm of STEM education. In 2009, he co-founded the Broadcom Foundation and became its first President and Chairman.

He drew on the memory of his own science-fair experiences and inspired the Foundation to sponsor the Broadcom MASTERS competition for middle-school scientists and engineers. Scott and his wife, Laurie Girand, have endowed a professorship of Social Ethics of Science and Technology at Stanford University and a professorship of STEM Equity Innovation and Research at Harvey Mudd College.
